Michiel Poesen has been a PhD candidate at the KU Leuven Faculty of Law since September 2017 (funded by a FLOF doctoral scholarship). Michiel's research focuses on the concept of 'matters relating to a contract', which is crucial in allocating jurisdiction over contractual and non-contractual disputes between the courts of the EU Member States – ranging from consumer rights enforcement, to disputes relating to employment and insurance matters. Additionally, he keeps track of the impact of Brexit on cross-border litigation in the EU. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Edinburgh (2018, funded by FWO, Research Foundation - Flanders) and at the University of Heidelberg Institute for comparative law, the conflict of laws and international business law (2019, funded by FWO, Research Foundation - Flanders).

Michiel obtained an LL.M. at KU Leuven in 2016. In the 2014/15 academic year, he studied at UC Louvain within the framework of Erasmus Belgica, a bilateral exchange programme between the Flemish and the French communities of Belgium.

Michiel has experience as a junior litigation associate in a Brussels based law firm, as a trainee at the European Commission (DG Justice and Consumers), and as a clerking intern in Belgian civil and commercial courts. A more detailed CV is available on this link.
