Development

LIRGIAD is a unique collaboration between research groups from different faculties and institutes at the Catholic University of Leuven. Researchers with backgrounds in economics, law, political sciences and social sciences work together to investigate the growing complexity of international agreements and the interactions they cause between local, national and international actors in the broad area of sustainable development.

The research group has been integrated into Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies.

The Lirgiad Working Papers can now be found in the archive of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies.

.LIRGIAD Research focus

Lirgiad focuses on the yet to be disentangled dynamics of multilevel governance in developing countries and transition economies. This raises questions such as:

  • What types of networks emerge amongst local actors around provisions in the international agreements?
  • What is the legal position of these actors in the national and international context?
  • What are the interfaces between the different layers in multilevel governance?

On our research page you can find a more detailed explanation of our research focus, which has also been represented visually, as well as the different projects (IDO and IMPULS) through which LIRGIAD came into place.

.LIRGIAD Database

LIRGIAD aims to combine the level of internal and international political openness on the one hand with the level of economic openness on the other hand. This information is integrated in the LIRGIAD database and will lead to the creation of a specific LIRGIAD openness index. In the current phase of development, access to the database is restricted to LIRGIAD staff.
