New Media and Communications Law
Welcome to the home page of the New Media and Communication Law research group of ICRI.
Since the early '90's the group has been conducting research into the Belgian, European and worldwide regulatory framework for the electronic communications sector. Currently, the most important research topics relate to the changing ways in which governments intervene in the communications sector and to establishing the appropriate regulatory and institutional framework to do so.
In recent years, the group mainly focused on the legal consequences of the convergence between the traditional "telecommunications" and "broadcasting" sectors, on the possibilities for competition law to drive the sector towards a truly competitive marketplace and to safeguard basic public policy objectives (e.g. pluralism), and on an appropriate and future-proof mechanism for the allocation of radio frequencies.
