Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the website of the K.U.Leuven Institute for Human Rights.

The Institute for Human Rights was founded in 1987 and is part of the Faculty of Law, Department of Public Law of the Catholic University of Leuven. Activities within the Institute focus on research and education in International and European Human Rights Law, with a particular focus on the law of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The professors and assistants working at the Institute are responsible for various human rights courses and tutorials taught at the K.U.Leuven and the University of Hasselt. These courses are taught by prof. dr. Koen Lemmens, Dr. Annelies Verstichel , Ms. Géraldine Mattioli-Zeltner and myself, with the help of teaching and research assistants Ms. Charline Daelman, Mr. Michaël Merrigan, Mr. Karel De Meester, Mr. Güan Schaiko and Ms. Annelies Verduyckt.

The Institute maintains strong ties with other international institutions, most notably through the network of the European Inter-University Institute for Human Rights and Democratisation in Venice, Italy. Each year in the second semester, one or more students from the European Master's programme in Human Rights and Democratisation find their way to Leuven for in-depth legal research. The Institute also organises several activities for international LL.M. students who have chosen international human rights law as their area of specialisation. Promising students can apply for the competitive internship programme, for which the Institute collaborates with several governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organsations.

Currently, the Institute is home to three doctoral researchers, namely Mr. Paulo de Tarso Arantes, Mr. Michaël Merrigan and Ms. Charline Daelman, with several other researchers visiting at different times of the year.

Please do not hesitate to contact us in case you have any further questions or comments.

Kind regards,

Paul Lemmens
