General information
Michaël Merrigan (born 14 June 1984) has been a PhD researcher and teaching assistant at the Institute for Human Rights since September 2009. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Law at the K.U.Leuven (2007, Cum Laude), an LL.M. in Public International Law at Leiden University, Netherlands (2009, Cum Laude - highest distinction in the Netherlands) and the European Master’s Degree (E.MA) in Human Rights and Democratisation from the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation in Venice, Italy (2009, award for top students). During his E.MA studies he also conducted research at the Irish Institute for Human Rights of the National University of Ireland in Galway, Ireland.
Michaël participated in the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition (2007, Max Huber Award for highest team score) and was a legal intern at the Association of Defence Counsel practicing before the Yugoslavia Tribunal in The Hague. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift voor Mensenrechten (Flemish Human Rights Journal).
As a teaching assistant he has taught tutorials at the K.U.Leuven, the University of Hasselt and in the framework of the European Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation in Venice, Italy. He is currently preparing a PhD thesis on the topic of fundamental duties in a democratic society, under the supervision of Prof. Paul Lemmens.
Michaël is a member of the Faculty of Law's Assistants' Representative body ('AAP-BAP Delegation'), and he is the contact person for human rights internships within the Institute for Human Rights.
