Summer Course on Human Rights
17 - 28 August 2009
The Hague (The Netherlands) and Leuven (Belgium)
Human rights become real only when proper mechanisms exist for protection and enforcement. This Summer Course on Human Rights focuses on the universal and regional systems of human rights protection. Attention will be paid to procedures and institutions for human rights monitoring at the universal and regional level, their co-existence and effectiveness.
The course aims at providing knowledge of the latest legal insights, as well as recent political developments relevant to human rights. It is intended for young professionals and researchers to broaden and further develop their human rights expertise about the substantive and institutional aspects of the promotion and protection of human rights at the international level, and to prepare them for further scholarly research.
The course takes place in The Hague (The Netherlands) and in Leuven (Belgium). It is a joint initiative of the Netherlands School of Human Rights Research, the Catholic University of Leuven, Northwestern University of Chicago and Notre Dame Law School. Plenary sessions are combined with visits to international organisations like the International Court of Justice in The Hague and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
Active involvement of participants in the two weeks course is strongly encouraged. The course is designed as an interactive process, in which participants are stimulated to draw on their own experiences in the field of human rights. At the end of each week, participants have the occasion to present their reflections.
