Walter Pintens (°1952)

Prof. Dr. Walter Pintens (Mechelen, 1952) is gewoon hoogleraar in de Faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Hij doceert er familiaal vermogensrecht, vergelijkend familierecht en rechtsvergelijking. Van 1992 tot 1996 was hij voorzitter van de Afdeling privaatrecht. Hij is Honorarprofessor aan de Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken met venia legendi voor burgerlijk recht en rechtsvergelijking en was gastprofessor aan de Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg (1995), aan de Humboldt-Universität in Berlijn (1996 en 2001) en aan de University of South Africa in Pretoria (2007). Zijn meer dan tweehonderdvijftig publicaties bestrijken zowel het domein van de rechtsvergelijking, als dat van het familierecht, het familiaal vermogensrecht, het notarieel recht en het internationaal privaatrecht. Zijn doctoraat over Echtscheiding door onderlinge toestemming (1982) werd bekroond met de Driejaarlijkse Prijs van het Notariaat. Hij is editor van het deel Family and Successsion Law in de International Encyclopaedia of Laws. Hij is lid van de redactie van het Rechtskundig Weekblad, corresponderend uitgever van het Zeitschrift für Europäisches Privatrecht en co-editor en voorzitter van de Internationaler Beirat van het Zeitschrift für das gesamte Familienrecht. Prof. Pintens is gewoon lid van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Internationale Betrekkingen en lid van de Gesellschaft für Rechtsvergleichung en van de International Society of Family Law en lid van de raad van toezicht van de Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Familienrecht. Prof. Pintens werd verkozen tot geassocieerd lid van de Académie Internationale de Droit Comparé te Parijs. Hij is stichtend lid van de Commission on European Family Law. In 1987 werd hij tot plaatsvervangend vrederechter in Leuven benoemd. Van 1992 tot 2000 verkoos het Belgische parlement hem als lid van het Wervingscollege der Magistraten en in 2009 werd hij benoemd tot lid van het Wetenschappelijk Comité van het Instituut voor Gerechtelijke Opleiding. Prof. Pintens is lid van de bestuurscommissie en van het dagelijks bestuur van het Leuvens Universitair Fonds en is bestuurder van VEWA.

Walter Pintens was born in 1952 in Mechelen (Belgium). He studied law at the Universities of Leuven, Tübingen and Munich. In 1982 he became doctor in law with a thesis on divorce by consent. He is Professor Ordinarius at the University of Leuven (Belgium) where he teaches family and succession law and comparative law and Honorary Professor at the Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken (Germany) where he teaches comparative law. From 1992 until 1996 he was president of the department of private law at the University of Leuven. Prof. Pintens was a visiting professor at the University of Freiburg (1995), at the Humboldt University of Berlin (1996 and 2001) and at the University of South Africa in Pretoria (2007). He has written several books and articles in the fields of family law, succession law, comparative law and private international law. He is editor of the volume Family and Succession Law in the International Encyclopaedia of Laws. He is a member of the editorial board of the Rechtskundig Weekblad, corresponding editor of the Zeitschrift für Europäisches Privatrecht and co-editor and chairman of the International Advisory Council of the Zeitschrift für das gesamte Familienrecht. Prof. Pintens is an ordinary member of the Royal Institute for International Relations (Brussels) and a member of the Gesellschaft für Rechtsvergleichung and the International Society of Family Law. He is a member of the board of the Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Familienrecht. He is also a founding member of the Commission of European Family Law. Prof. Pintens was elected associated member of the International Academy of Comparative Law (Paris). In 1987 Prof. Pintens was appointed as deputy justice of the peace in Leuven. From 1992 until 2000 he was a member of the Board for the Recruting of Judges, elected by the Belgian Parliament and in 2009 he was appointed a member of the Scientific Committee of the Institute for Judicial Training. Prof.Pintens is a member of the board of trustees of the Leuvens Universitair Fonds and a member of the board of directors of the managing company VEWA.
