Easter 2013, we are going to visit The Big Apple for a third consecutive time with ELSA Leuven. In this wonderful city, which has so much to offer, we are going to visit all the hotspots: Times Square, 5th Avenue, Broadway, Ground Zero and so much more. You will see it all! Off course we will also pay attention to the legal aspect of New York.

On the 28th of March, we will visit the capital of international law, The Hague. We will attend a hearing at the International Criminal Court followed by a briefing. Afterwards, we go to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia where we get an introduction to the Court and attend a short hearing. At last, there will be a guided tour in the visitor center of the Peace Palace. Before leaving back to Leuven you can enjoy some free time to explore the city centre. We recommend to bring a lunch, as we only have time for free time from 16h onwards.

After an exhausting exam period followed by the much needed rest, ELSA Leuven is ready again. Why this is useful and more importantly how to resolve a dispute in an alternative way and still positive way, Dirk De Meulemeester will explain in this reading. We visit the concentration camp Natzweiler-Struthof, the Eurocorps, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. Interesting workshop on an exclusive location!

In the past few years Transfer Pricing has become increasingly important in the area of taxation.This workshop explores the Transfer Pricing issues arising for a multinational group that operates in a number of jurisdictions around the globe.

KPMG will provide for a couple of senior tax advisers who will give information on this subject, suitable both for students who are new to this issue, as well as for participants who are already familiar with these techniques, in order to gain a good understanding of the Transfer Pricing principles.

This workshop is also a perfect opportuntiy to review and clarify some of the issues dealt with in the mastercourse "International Taxation".

In November 2011, ELSA Leuven plans a 4 days visit to the upcoming metropole of Europe: Berlin, one of the greatest cultural and political centres of the continent. Berlin is known because of its high-developed cultural life, its monumental architecture, its pioneering role in fashion and music and last but not least its extensive nightlife. However, the city is also characterized by its less proud making history, of which its remnants spontaneously insists on silence in the middle of this currently dazzling, modern and open minded city. This plurality of factors makes Berlin an asbolute “must see”.

ELSA invites you all to the official opening ceremony of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law, Wednesday the 3rd of May at 19h (Zeger van Hee, Oude Valk).

From the 3rd till the 6th of May the European finale of the “ELSA Moot Court Competition on World Trade Organisation Law” takes place in Leuven. During this four days event law students from all over Europe and several WTO-experts meet each other.

During the openings ceremony special guest Prof. Dr. Frank Hoffmeister (Deputy Head of Cabinet to the Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht) will give a keynote speech on "Why WTO Law Matters: A European Perspective". The evening closes with a reception for all attendees.

On Thursday and Friday the teams compete in the Leuven Province building for a spot in the semi-finals. The competition simulates the procedure of the Dispute Settlement Body of the WTO. On Saturday the semi-finals and the grand finale takes place in the Zeger van Hee (Oude Valk). Of course everyone is always welcome at the several pleading sessions.

The purpose of this seminar is to inform about the current situation in the field of counter-terrorism and human rights; are our rights as ordinary citizens being violated, how do we balance the fight against terrorism vs. our human rights, how can we minimize violation of human rights in the fight against terrorism, and how does the future look in counter-terrorism; will our human rights be decrease in order to combat the terrorists and what will we accept? All this and much more will be examined in lectures, field trips and workshop during the week. This Summer ELSA Belgium will, like every year, organise the ELSA House training week in Brussels (from 12 to 19 July). This is a training week for ELSA members from all over Europe to learn more about the organisation itself, to get soft skill trainings, interesting lectures, visits to for example the European Parliament, etc. Not to mention the diverse social programme starting with the famous 'Transition BBQ' at the ELSA House. It is an ideal opportunity to get more involved in ELSA, to meet the international board, to get to know lots of new people from all over Europe and mainly just to have a great time. Every year, ELSA International organises a moot court competition on WTO law, with participants from all over the world. The final round of 2008-2009 will be held from Tuesday 19th of May till Sunday 24th of May, in Taipei, capital city of Taiwan.

From 30 April to 2 May, we'll take the Eurostar to London for a thrilling three-day programme. On Thursday, you will get an insight to London working life with a lunch at Deloitte, a visit to Cleary Gottlieb LLP and a walk through Canary Wharf (the financial district). Friday, there will be a legal walk with visits of the Inns of Court, Royal Courts of Justice, the City Hall and the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey). Friday night, some special activities will be suggested. Saturday will be a free day to follow your own preferences.

From Sunday morning the 5th of April till Sunday evening the 10th of April, ELSA Leuven goes to Geneva: the European headquarters of United Nations, and also a city with a whole range of international organisations, institutions and a fabulous old city center. All of this and membership for just €199 !!

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, the Institute for International Law, the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies and ELSA Leuven offer you a guest lecture by Dr. Paul Behrens, from Leicester University, lecturer in International and Criminal Law at Leicester University. The lecture will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Arne Vandaele.

Almost one month ago, Barack Obama has been elected as the 44th President of the United States of America. Now is the time for a thorough reflection on this elections, and on the team Obama is putting together. This will be done by prof. Bart Kerremans, an expert of American politics.

From Sundaymorning the 16th of November till Tuesday evening the 18th of November, ELSA Leuven goes to Strasbourg: the European cradle of Human Rights, and a splendid city with lots of places worth seeing.
We visit European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. We are invited for lunch by the Permanent Representation of Belgium and we discover the city centre.

In the beginning of November we will visit the capital of international law.
We will attend a hearing at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia followed by a briefing by one of the judges. Afterwards, we will have the time to explore the city centre. There will be a guided tour in the Peace Palace, hosting the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of International Arbitration.

Amaryllis will represent ELSA Leuven in the Belgian delegation on the most important meeting of ELSA International. At the International Council Meeting, the fundamental policy choices of ELSA are voted by the plenary session, after preparatory work in the working groups. Traditionally, some 500 law students from all across Europe participate.

Belgium, a small though utterly complex country, especially when you are new and unfamiliar to it. ELSA Leuven organises an event to make it easier for erasmus (law) students, or -for that matter- anyone who is interested to get acquinted with the Belgian culture, at least if there exists such a thing. A professional speaker will clarify the Belgian constitutional structure and the present political situation.
