Curriculum vitae:

Esther VAN ZIMMEREN is Assistant Professor in the LL.M. in European Competition and IP law administered by the Institute of European Legal Studies at the University of Liège (Belgium) and post-doctoral research fellow of the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) at the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights of the KU Leuven.

Her research covers intellectual property (IP) law, in particular patent and trademark law, competition law, international trade law and governance issues. At present, Esther is working on her post-doctoral research project on “Good Governance in Patent Law” and an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Open Innovation: The Interaction between Legal Architectures & Innovation Strategies”.
Esther is teaching “Patent Law” and a course on the “TRIPs-agreement” in Liège and is regularly invited to give guest lectures on patent law, copyright law, IP and (open) innovation, competition law, law & economics and IP, and European contract law.
Esther is currently visiting professor at Hanken Business School in Helsinki (August-October 2012). In 2011, she was a research fellow at the Brocher Foundation in Geneva and in 2008 she spent several months as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley and the Institute of Intellectual Property (IIP) in Tokyo.

Before joining the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights as a research fellow in the project called “Gene Patents and Public Health” in 2004, Esther was a legal assistant for Judge A.W.H. Meij at the General Court of the EU in Luxembourg in the area of European trademark and competition law (2002-2004).
She studied European & International Law, with a strong emphasis on European competition law (Master in Laws, University of Tilburg, The Netherlands, 2001, cum laude) and Dutch Private Law (Master in Laws, University of Tilburg, The Netherlands, 2002, cum laude).  During her studies at the University of Tilburg, Esther was a research assistant to Prof. dr. S. Prechal. She also has an LL.M. in EU Law and Intellectual Property Law from the KU Leuven (Belgium, 2002, magna cum laude) and a PhD in Law from the KU Leuven (Belgium, 2011, “Towards a New Patent Paradigm for the Biomedical Sector? Facilitating Access, Open Innovation and Social Responsibility in Patent Law in the US, Europe and Japan”).
