INTRODUCTION

The Leuven Centre for a Common Law of Europe (Leuven CCLE) has the pleasure to invite you to the second Walter van Gerven Lecture. This year, prof. Bruno De Witte will discuss "The European Constitutional Treaty and the National Constitutions". Professor De Witte holds the joint chair in European Law of the Law Department and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

ABSTRACT:
"The current process of elaboration of a constitutional treaty for the European Union has many interfaces with the constitutional law of the member states of the European Union. Some important linkages between these two levels of constitutional law will be presented and discussed in the lecture: (I) national constitutional norms and traditions serve as a source of inspiration for the drafting of a European Constitution; (II) the formal legal relationship between the future constitutional treaty and the national constitutions is, possibly, a matter to be dealt with in a European constitutional document; and (III) national constitutions impose substantive and procedural conditions for the entry into force of a constitutional treaty."
