Why study Canon Law?
- Our programmes provide a thorough legal formation. As a future canon lawyer, you will gain, more so than in civil law, insight into the context and nature of law. This is needed to solve practical problems in church and society. You will explore the law of church and society and develop analytical and practical skills to respond to the mutual influence of Law, Society and Religion.
- Learning in our Faculty is stimulated by a variety of modes: lectures, seminars, guided independent learning, case studies, and oral and written presentations to name a few.
- All programmes can be followed by distance learning, with attendance required for only two weeks each semester.
- While global church and local pastoral work are continuously changing, a diploma in Canon Law ensures employment in a great variety of sectors.
Profile of a canon lawyer
A canon lawyer is a specialised lawyer. Therefore, the relevance of a canon lawyer reaches far beyond the borders of Roman Catholic Church.
- While lawyers are nowadays educated to deal with positive law only, a canon lawyer is trained to get insight in to the foundations and meta-juridical aspects of the law. This gives the future canon lawyer a special insight in the limits and possibilities of the law.
- Recent evoluations in society, such as globalization, standardization and individualization, ask for a new legal approach. Backed by his special training, the modern canon lawyer has a special place in modern practice and study of the law.
- Besides, more and more problems arise in society with regard to special contexts, such as supra-national organisations, multicultural society, crime prevention... The canon lawyer uses his knowledge of the nature of law to explore the benefits law can offer in these specific situations.
Information (sessions)
The faculty of Canon Law is a small faculty. Contact between (future) students and staff is straight and somehow informal. So, you are most welcome every working day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a visit or to contact Eric De Wilde for information or advice.
The faculty does not organise info sessions for future students. Once a student, you can contact Eric De Wilde for further questions.
