Financial aspects

Tuition fee

The tuition fee is 5.600 Euro. Students who do not have sufficient resources can apply for a full or partial waiver of tuition fee.

This fee does not cover accommodation, food or books.

Financial aid

Several students may need partial or substantial financial support to fund their stay in Leuven. It is important to keep in mind that the Faculty of Law does not grant any direct financial support whatsoever to LL.M. students, nor does it have any teaching or research assistantships available. The Centre for Advanced Legal Studies does provide some financial support (see infra). There is no student loan scheme organised. For these reasons, applicants are strongly recommended to explore various alternative sources of funding prior to applying to the LL.M. programme.

The Centre for Advanced Legal Studies assist applicants in meeting their financial needs in two ways:

  • One option is to grant a full or partial waiver of tuition. This possibility is strictly reserved to particularly brilliant and needy students whom the Centre absolutely wants to join the LL.M. programme. In order to apply for a tuition waiver, applicants must fill out a special Application for Tuition Waiver Form, which can be obtained from the C.A.L.S. Office upon request. This form has to be accompanied by official documents that give sufficient proof of the applicant's financial situation and also clearly demonstrate that he/she has applied to a national or international institution or organisation for a fellowship or scholarship. Failure to submit these documents may result in the tuition waiver request being inadmissible. Furthermore, an application for a tuition waiver does not automatically entitle the applicant to receive such waiver. To apply for a tuition waiver after admission is inadmissible.
  • Applicants with particular financial problems may be permitted to pay the tuition fee in instalments. In this case, the fee may be paid in two or at most three instalments, the last of which must be paid before the beginning of the second official examination session in June-July. Candidates who wish to make use of this possibility should include a written request at the time of application, clearly stating their reason.
