In the aftermath of the largest financial crisis in decades, a tidal wave of new legislation has hit the EU financial sector. The KU Leuven Law Faculty offers the ideal setting to get acquainted with the sector itself and the continuously evolving legislative landscape in the EU.
The financial law option of the LL.M. programme aims at providing students with a thorough understanding of a broad range of legal questions relating to the financial sector, the backbone of our economic system. The programme has two main strong points: (i) an interactive approach of the subject matter and (ii) the proximity of the European institutions and the financial institutions in Brussels.

The first course, titled “Financial markets”, introduces students to the basic functions of the financial markets in terms of money and credit supply, and the role of financial law and supervisors in terms of risk mitigation and maintaining long term market stability. The second course is titled “European Banking and Investment Services Law” and takes a micro-perspective: it offers a thought-provoking analysis of the EU legal framework on the relationship between the financial institution and its clients, both on the retail and the wholesale level. In addition, the course presents the various means of enforcing financial law. A third course covers the details and specificities of insurance law.

For all three courses tutorials are organized for LL.M. students only. They intend to provoke an in-depth discussion on specific legal issues and rely on involvement of experts in the field, academic staff and students.

Finally, a unique feature of the KU Leuven LL.M. programme are the legal clinics. The financial law clinics have quickly built a reputation of being a prominent meeting place for LL.M. students, influential members of various business sectors and public authorities in Brussels. In each session a topical issue of financial law is presented by two expert practitioners with a different point of view (e.g. supervisor and banker; EU official and professional organisation,…). This approach not only guarantees a lively debate between the speakers but also sparks a discussion with the audience.
