Taxation determines behavior of human beings and legal entities. Investment decisions of corporations are driven by their tax treatment. Individuals work, and even live, where their income and/or wealth is taxed in the most favorable way. In times of globalization, the tax treatment of cross-border transactions becomes increasingly important. The EU internal market is aimed to be a market without tax boundaries.
The LLM program of the KU Leuven offers an LLM in International and European tax law that meets the increasing demands for education in these fields of tax law.
The Institute of Tax Law was founded by Prof. Em. F. Vanistendael, a living monument in the field of European tax law. It has specialized in research in international and European tax law for many years. Situated only a few kilometers from the EU capital of Brussels, it has developed very strong relations with the tax experts of the EU Commission, the Belgian Ministry of Finances and the most leading law firms and tax advisers in the city. It has also built very strong academic working relations with the tax institutions at universities worldwide.
The tax program of the KU Leuven’s LLM program is aimed at university graduates in law from everywhere in the world who wish to acquire specialist knowledge in international and EU tax law. Prof. L. De Broe, the current chair of the Institute of Tax Law, has gained more than 20 years of experience as a tax partner in leading law firms in Brussels. He teaches “International Taxation” (focusing on the basic principles of international tax law and the OECD and UN Model Tax Convention) and “Current Developments in International and European Tax Law” (a course addressing the most current evolutions in these fields of law). Prof. A. Cordewener, a tax German practitioner specializing in EU tax law, teaches “European Taxation“ (focusing on all aspects of EU direct and indirect tax law). The program is supplemented by a series of lectures in EU and international tax law featuring experts of the EU Commission and practitioners of leading law and tax advisory firms from across Europe.
